The Pursuit of a Higher Education
Written by Izen cahill, GateWay Community College (AZ)
First off, I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity presented by this scholarship this year! It is not just a financial resource but something that reinforces my commitment to education. My journey has been influenced by significant challenges since my mom left when I turned 17, leaving me to navigate life independently. During this time, I found myself sleeping on friends' couches and working tirelessly without a clear direction. Although I knew I wanted to pursue a degree, the daunting reality of affording college seemed impossible under my circumstances.
With this uncertainty, I encountered an inspiring faculty member who would play a pivotal role in my educational journey: Leona Morales, the program manager for a grant offered at GateWay Community College. My first virtual meeting with her was a turning point. I entered the meeting feeling overwhelmed by my financial struggles and lack of a support system, but Leona listened attentively. Her patience and understanding created a safe space to express my fears about pursuing a degree. With genuine concern, Leona acknowledged my hardships while reminding me of my potential. She spoke with conviction about my abilities. Her belief, motivated me to continue with the interview process. This grant wasn't just another funding opportunity; it represented a chance to ease my financial burden and make attending college a real possibility.
During our conversation, Leona explained that many students face challenges similar to mine. She highlighted stories of individuals who overcame adversity and significantly contributed to their fields. Hearing these stories was impactful; it made me realize that I, too, could create a brighter future for myself. Her words instilled a sense of hope that propelled me to continue my pursuit of a degree in Nursing. Leona encouraged me to leverage the resources available at the college, including tutoring and counseling services, which have been instrumental in my success. With her guidance, I began to see the path before me more clearly. I started to envision myself as a nurse, helping patients and providing them with the care and support they need. This vision became my driving force, motivating me to persevere despite the obstacles I faced, whether they were financial constraints, academic challenges, or personal setbacks. As I reflect on my journey, I am immensely grateful for the encouragement and support I received and still receive from Leona. Her belief in my potential helped me transition from a place of uncertainty to one filled with purpose and ambition. I am now committed to completing my degree and fulfilling my dream of making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.
In conclusion, Leona’s encouragement not only inspired me to continue my education but also fueled my determination to pursue a degree and a career in healthcare.
