Recognizing and Responding to Implicit Bias in the Classroom
Description
This workshop is designed for faculty members who want to improve success for students as well as for themselves by recognizing and responding to bias through self-reflection and revision of course policies and assignments. By the end of the workshop, participants will have developed skills that allow them to understand what bias is; recognize the ways in which bias often shows up verbally, nonverbally, in the environment and in policies; and use anti-bias strategies to revise an assignment.
By the end of this workshop, participants will know or be able to:
- Understand what implicit bias is and how to recognize it.
- Understand individual and systemic factors that contribute to bias.
- Know how to use anti-bias strategies to revise class assignments.
Plans for Audience Participation and Interaction:
This workshop involves discussions, videos, group interactions, reflections, and a homework assignment designed to help faculty members transform class assignments to include anti-bias strategies.
Facilitator(s)
Dr. Andrea D. Dardello is the founder of Strategic Teaching and Reaching, LLC, an educational consulting service that equips community college faculty and administrators to facilitate the success of African American and Hispanic students through restorative and culturally responsive teaching practices.
During her 30-year career as a community college educator, Dr. Dardello has trained over 120 faculty and administrators across the U.S in culturally responsive teaching pedagogy, trained nearly 200 community college faculty across the U.S. in implicit bias and microaggression training, and led faculty in syllabus and assignment audits to create equitable grading practices.
Using data-driven analysis to identify and develop targeted interventions for under-served students, Dr. Dardello led faculty trained in Culturally Responsive Teaching to meet institutional benchmarks of 74% success rates for Asian, Latinx, African American, and White students enrolled in face-to-face, hybrid, structured remote, and online courses.
As Acting Senior Diversity Officer at Frederick Community College, Dr. Dardello led cross-functional teams to produce outcomes for the institution’s DEI Strategic Plan.
Dr. Dardello is a certified restorative practice facilitator, a certified professional coach, and a trained communicator and motivational speaker. Dr. Dardello is also a retired community college educator and proud mother of a teenage son.
