What is your favorite part about being a community or technical college educator?
The most rewarding part of my job is helping students fulfill their educational goals. The true reward is when a student completes their goals and says, “Thank you for all your help.”
What is something very important to you about your professional practice?
I love being of service to others, maintaining a good working relationship with colleagues, and building friendships and a network based on respect, trust, and integrity. I enjoy being able to troubleshoot and solve problems to keep our division running smoothly.
How do you connect with your students?
My position at the college allows me the opportunity to meet with students on a one-to-one basis. I connect with students and working professionals during registration for the Law Enforcement Academy, in-service classes, and when reserving rooms for training. I assist and support all students and visitors at the Emergency Services Education Center in any capacity I can, from a friendly smile to technical issues. My door is always open.
Share a memorable experience on the job and explain why it was so impactful.
Recently when I was leaving my office, I noticed a student who was obviously in distress. As I approached, the student looked at me with tears in her eyes. My immediate response was to open my arms. As I did, she walked right into my arms, shuddered, and then relaxed against me. It was just for a moment, then she looked at me and gave me a weary smile as she walked off. A couple of days later the student came to my office to thank me for being there for her that day. She told me she had received news that a family member, her sole support, was seriously ill. Besides the anguish she felt over her loved one, she thought she would have to quit school. “I was devastated,” she said. “I might lose my loved one and end up giving up on my dream. Then you held me and I knew I would be okay.” Being there for that student humbled me and gave her comfort and courage to follow her dream.
If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?
Jesus, the Son of God. Jesus is the redeemer and center of my religious beliefs. To be in his presence would be a great honor.
