Title V Grant Supports New Engagement Center
Brookhaven College has a long tradition of opening doors for anyone who wants to improve his or her life through education and training. Our Title V grant has given us an opportunity to re-imagine how we provide support to our Hispanic and low-income students. This fall the college will open the doors of a newly constructed center that will provide intrusive, centralized academic services coupled with career counseling and personal support through community referrals. Integrating these services will let the college assist the whole student through collaboration between instruction and student services with a goal of increasing student retention and completion rates.
Brookhaven College Welcomes P-Tech Partnership
As one of the colleges of the Dallas County Community College District, Brookhaven College has played a key role in the developing partnership between DCCCD and the Dallas Independent School District to create Pathways to Technology Early College High Schools, P-TECHs. Dr. Thom D. Chesney, president of Brookhaven College, has been one of the DCCCD initiative leaders since 2016 when the districts began by opening eight collegiate academies within DISD high schools. The partnership added ten more early college high schools in 2017 to bring the total to 18, three of which are partnered with Brookhaven College. The P-TECH model expands on the traditional early college high school by focusing on applied science programs for career preparation, bringing in industry partnerships to support future job placement. Thanks to this partnership 30 students at the Thomas Jefferson Collegiate Academy earned their first credential in the Business Administration pathway with a Business Trainee I Skills Achievement Award from Brookhaven College.
