The New Science of Learning: Teaching That Promotes Student Success

There is a proliferation of misinformation pertaining to how students learn and how best to teach them. Moreover, students often do not understand their learning processes and typically rely on implicit assumptions or trial-and-error to memorize new material. The good news is that research provides clear evidence of what works best in the classroom with respect to human motivation and deep learning. This webinar provides you with evidence about how students learn, shares methods that can be used to get students more involved with course content, and demonstrates applications of pedagogical research that can be used in almost any class.

Todd Zakrajsek, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at University of North  Carolina Chapel Hill, where he also serves as the Associate Director of the Faculty Development Fellowship Program. Todd’s current academic work and publications pertain to effective instructional strategies, student learning, and faculty development. Prior to joining UNC Chapel Hill, Todd served as the founding director of the Faculty Center of Innovative Teaching at Central Michigan University. Prior to that he served as a tenured Associate  Professor of  Psychology at Southern Oregon University. In addition to his current work at UNC, Todd serves on several education-related boards, including the Journal of Excellence in College TeachingInternational Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, andEducation in the Health Professions. In recent years, Todd has served on several boards and work groups charged with creating faculty resources and opportunities related to teaching and learning with organizations such as Lenovo Computer, Microsoft, Harvard, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the American Council on Education.
